PROJECT UPDATE
SAK Construction LLC has completed Phase 1 Restoration of Existing Sewer Lines and Manholes. This project rehabilitated the existing sewer piping and manholes that were damaged in the flood. SAK Construction has installed a special liner inside the existing sewer main that renews the sewer quickly and without excavation.
Smithco Construction has completed the construction of Phase 2 Lift Station. This project constructed two new lift stations to pump sewage into new sewer lines that are not vulnerable to flood damage.
AUI Inc. of Albuquerque has been selected to Construct Phase 3-Hazard Mitigation. Construction started on October 3, 2022, and will mitigate flood damage to the Sewer Interceptor.
WHAT IS A SEWER LINE INTERCEPTOR?
A sewer line interceptor is the main line in a sewer system. It receives the flow from trunk sewer lines and sometimes from stormwater runoff and directs it to the wastewater treatment plant. It is among the larger lines of a sewer system.
PROJECT BENEFITS
Potential reduction in infiltration and inflow into the collection system
Extension of the useful service life of the collection system
Prevention of damage to the interceptor from future flood events
Improved flow mechanics through interceptor
PROJECT HISTORY AND NEED
2017-2018 Molzen Corbin hired to evaluate the 30% Design, prepare value engineering report, and revise the scope to be more affordable and within the constraints of the FEMA Public Assistance Grant requirements.
2018-2019 Molzen Corbin prepares design documents for a project consisting of primarily repair and rehabilitation of the existing sewer line with additional in-river modifications designed to protect the sewer line from flood hazards. The three major scope elements are: 1) Restoration of Existing Sewer Lines and Manholes; 2) Lift Stations and Forcemains; and 3) Hazard Mitigation and Stabilization of Sewer Lines.
Work for the restoration phase has been completed. The hazard mitigation work began in Oct 2022, and they are finishing the remaining 3 locations.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
The existing interceptor is located in close proximity to the Rio Ruidoso, which presents the following challenges:
Accessibility to interceptor for construction activities
High groundwater
Prevalence of rock in underlying soils
River channelization has increased flood hazards and degraded the river channel
